ADVANCED DIY or PROFESSIONAL HANDY-PERSON

**Please note, this is a non-accredited course- you will NOT receive a license or certificate of attainment, however you will learn vital skills needed to perform handy-person work and you will receive a certificate of completion. In Victoria, you do not need any formal qualifications to be employed as a handy-person, so this course may be perfect for you!

We are offering a 2-part WEEKDAY course, you can do part 1, part 2 or take both and become a Professional Handy-person extraordinaire!

DURATION: Each course is offered for 3 days a week for 2 weeks- learn it all in just 4 weeks!

SESSION 1: WHS, Legal Requirements, & Plumbing Basics

In this session, students will learn how to:

  • Understand and following safety protocols
  • Use safety equipment and personal protective equipment (PPE) properly
  • Know what you can and can’t do LEGALLY as a handy-person
  • Fix minor leaks and drips
  • Replace taps and showerheads

SESSION 2: Basic Carpentry Skills

In this session, students will learn how to:

  • Know which hand/power tools to buy and what they should be used for
  • Cut, saw, hammer and drill properly
  • Choose the right kind of timber for your job
  • Build a wall

SESSION 3: Plastering

In this session, students will learn how to:

  • Patch small holes and cracks
  • Repair or replace damaged plaster
  • Hang plaster sheets
  • Join plaster sheets

SESSION 4: Painting & Finishing

In this session, students will learn how to:

  • Prepare surfaces for painting.
  • Use painting tools
  • Apply paint and stains.
  • Repair and repaint walls and surfaces.

SESSION 5: Doors

In this session, students will learn how to:

  • Hang a door
  • Install locks and handles
  • Install architraves
  • Install door jambs and door stops

SESSION 6: Window & Door Maintenance

In this session, students will learn how to:

  • Repair or replace weather stripping
  • Replace worn-out seals around windows and doors
  • Lubricate hinges and tracks
  • Fix drafts and minor issues with windows and doors
  • Repair or replace damaged woodwork (skirting, architraves etc.)

This 6 Day Intensive Workshop will teach you a range of necessary skills that will help you to start your own Handy-Person business and will enable you to complete your own DIY projects around the house!

HANDS-ON PROJECTS INCLUDED IN PART 1 OF THIS COURSE

  • Replace washers and change taps/shower heads
  • Build a wall
  • Hang and repair plaster
  • Prepare and paint walls and cornices
  • Hang a door, install locks and handles, install/repair architraves, door jambs and door stops
  • Replace weather strips and seals

After completing this course, you will be able to:

  • Replace washers and O rings, change taps and shower heads
  • Build a non-structural wall, hang it with plaster and paint it
  • Hang a door, install door locks and handles
  • Install and repair architraves, skirting and plaster
  • Replace weather strips and seals
  • Sand and stain or paint wooden projects

SESSIONS 7: WHS: Legal Restrictions & Simple Concreting

In this session, students will learn how to:

  • Follow safety protocols
  • Use safety equipment and personal protective equipment (PPE) properly
  • Uphold your legal regulations: What you can and can’t do as a handy-person
  • Box out a concreting project, place steel bars and use mesh

SESSION 8-9: Tiling and Flooring

In this session, students will learn how to:

  • Measure and lay out tiles correctly
  • Prepare a surface for tiling
  • Cut tiles
  • Place and space tiles
  • Grout
  • Replace damaged tiles
  • Install different kinds of flooring

SESSION 10: Basic Roof Repairs

In this session, students will learn how to:

  • Replace missing or damaged roof tiles
  • Seal minor roof leaks
  • Properly apply caulk to seal gaps and cracks

SESSION 11-12: Simple Decking

In this session, students will learn how to:

  • Build a non-attached deck frame
  • Put in stumps and make the substructure level
  • Install bearers and joists
  • Lay decking

This second, 6 Day Intensive Workshop will teach you the necessary skills that will enable you to offer more services when you start your own Handy-Person business and will allow you to complete more of your own DIY projects around the house!

HANDS-ON PROJECTS INCLUDED IN PART 2 OF THIS COURSE

  • Box out a concreting project, using steel bars and mesh
  • Cut tiles and lay them both vertically and horizontally
  • Grout tiles
  • Install timber flooring
  • Replace tiles
  • Apply caulk
  • Build a deck- including joists, bearers, decking boards

After completing this course, you will be able to:

  • Lay small areas of concrete- using steel bars and mesh
  • Tile floors and walls
  • Lay flooring boards
  • Replace damaged tiles
  • Apply caulking correctly
  • Build a deck (subject to council – approval)

As if all the learning included above wasn’t reason enough to do our courses, we also offer:

  • Hands-On Learning: Practice what you learn with real projects in our workshop
  • Expert Instructors: Our experienced, VET and trade-qualified instructors will guide you every step of the way
  • Certification: Receive a certificate of completion to showcase your newfound skills
  • Prepares you to start your own handy-person business or enables you to eliminate costly repair bills and maintain your home like a pro

Each workshop is available for a total, all-inclusive cost of $2,500 including all materials.

If you choose to sign up for both courses- we will offer you a $500 credit making your total cost for both courses $4500. You can also pay the cost of the course in 4 instalments, over the 4 weeks of the course.

Students must: 

  • Be 18 years or older
  • Be physically capable of performing more complex DIY/Handy-Person work

Now that you are extra DIY savvy, you may want to learn more or even seek a career in Carpentry or Building.

Stage 4: If you still want more – consider signing up to our nationally recognised Certificate 3 in Carpentry course. You could be a fully qualified chippie earning real trade wages in one year!

Stage 5: Take your first step towards becoming a registered builder yourself with either our Certificate 4 in Building and Construction or a Diploma in Building and Construction (click here for the Building pathway or here for the Management pathway)
